2011-2012 Season

“A Musical Melting Pot”

Get ready for another exciting season with one of Silicon Valley’s favorite musical groups – the San Jose Wind Symphony! Join Dr. Edward C. Harris, our acclaimed music and artistic director, as he celebrates ten years at the helm of this outstanding ensemble. Discover why SJWS enjoys one of the fastest-growing audiences in the Bay Area. Enjoy timeless classics, toe-tapping marches, world-class guest soloists and modern masterpieces by today’s greatest composers.

Our 54th season explores some of the many influences that have created the uniquely American musical experience: “A Musical Melting Pot.” We’ll cross the continent from Broadway to Hollywood, span the sonic spectrum with flute and tuba soloists, and pay visits to two of the world’s greenest gems — the baseball diamond and the Emerald Isle. From classical to jazz, from ragtime to rock ‘n’ roll, our musical stew of a season has something for everyone.

“Bernstein, Broadway and The Beatles”

McAfee Center, Saratoga

Featuring:
Edward C. Harris, conductor

The new season kicks off with a bang as the British Invasion meets the Great White Way. There’ll be plenty of Lenny – from Candide to West Side Story – and a stop in Oklahoma, too, by way of Richard Rodgers. And we’ll salute the Fab Four, with Ira Hearshen’s setting of the Beatles’ landmark final album, Abbey Road – A Symphonic Portrait.

Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, 3:00 PM

“Out In Left Field”"

McAfee Center, Saratoga

Featuring:
Walter Mayes, narrator

The baseball season may be over, but we just can’t wait until next year. Join SJWS as we celebrate America’s favorite pastime. From the national anthem to the seventh-inning stretch, we’ll take you out to the ball game and have you singing, “Bye Bye Baby!” Our featured work is Randol Allen Bass’s Casey at the Bat, with a very special guest narrator. Pl-a-a-a-a-y ball!

“Tiptoe Through the Tubas”

McAfee Center, Saratoga

Featuring:
Marty Erickson, tuba

How low can you go? SJWS welcomes tuba virtuoso Marty Erickson in a program that features that most sublime – and subsonic – of the brass instruments. In addition to performing several breathtaking solo works, Mr. Erickson will be joined by the Wind Symphony’s outstanding tuba section in Jerry Brubaker’s delightful Tiptoe Through the Tubas.
